If you’re someone who gets discouraged for not hitting the daily 10,000-step mark, a new study says you may not need need to put so much pressure on yourself.

Anchor Kristen Welker shared this news during the July 24 broadcast of the Today Show, referencing an Australian-based study published in The Lancet Public Health. The study suggests that aiming for 7,000 steps a day may be all you need to reap the health benefits of walking.

Researchers reviewed 57 prospective studies tracking adults’ daily step counts measured by devices like pedometers and fitness trackers.

They looked at a broad range of health outcomes including all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline, mental health, physical function, and fall risk.
