Though it has not yet been used much in skincare, pterostilbene could soon generate buzz as the next anti-aging superstar.

There is almost no claim anti-aging skincare products won’t make. From brightening and tightening to restoring elasticity or making crow’s feet vanish, every lotion, mask and serum out there promises to rewind time overnight in their own special way (even though the fine print in those ads often says “results not typical”).

Skincare that holds off, or even reverses, certain signs of aging does exist to a degree. Behind the flashy claims, science backs the efficacy of ingredients such as retinol, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, resveratrol, and ceramides, which often show up in topical potions available over the counter. And now, a team of researchers has created a facial emulsion with a new wonder ingredient—one that even skincare influencers who have tried every product from almost every brand in existence have probably never heard of.
